We jinxed it. Just as the weather started to warm up and we started getting ready for spring we got hit with the worst snow storm of 2018. We’d love to be writing about the perfect spring activities in Utah, or maybe five fun date ideas for warmer weather, but here we are. Freezing, grumpy, and writing about Utah’s extraordinarily moody weather. Since this most recent snowstorm was a painful reminder of how the snow season is not quite over yet, we’re coming at you with four fantastic tips for winter car care. Here’s what you should always remember when it comes to car care for colder weather.
Check Your Battery
Cold weather can wreak havoc on your battery. In fact, batteries can lose about half of their power in colder temperatures. These are mostly extreme cases of large temperature fluctuations, but better safe than sorry. A dead battery means a car that won’t start, and a car that won’t start is pretty useless if you ask us.
Clean Your Windows
No, we don’t mean take some Windex to those dirty windows. We mean clear the snow and ice off of your car! We know it can be a drag to fully clean the snow and ice off your car in the frigid mornings before work, but it is imperative to your safety as well as the well-being of other drivers on the road. Be sure to remove all the snow from your car that you can. This snow can end up flying off and hitting others’ cars on the roads, which creates quite the frightening surprise. Avoid being that driver and help keep everyone a little safer on the roads this winter.
Check Your Tire Tread
Having adequate tread on your tires is imperative to safe driving in slick conditions. Without it, you’ll find yourself slipping and sliding and wondering who decided to grease the roads that morning. Snow and ice are an inevitable hazard on Utah roads and it’s best to be prepared to handle them with proper tire tread. Think your tires could use an upgrade? Check Your Wiper Fluid
If you’ve ever driven behind a semi-truck on the highway the day after a snow storm, you know this all too well. A full reservoir of wiper fluid is a must for driving through inclement weather. Muddy, wet, snowy, and generally poor road conditions will kick up all sorts of junk onto your windshield, making it hard to see when you need to the most. Make sure that wiper fluid is full to ensure you won’t end up in an accident.
These four fantastic tips are just a few of the things you can do to make sure your winter driving experience isn’t filled with frustration.
