2019 Jeep Compass Review Sandy

The 2019 Compass is helping Jeep move in a very good direction

After a major redesign in 2016--where, briefly, there was a new '17 Compass and an ALL-new '17 Compass--the second-generation Jeep Compass compact SUV is going strong in its third production year. This second-gen Compass is unique in a variety of ways, and not just because it's one of three compacts you can choose from in the Jeep SUV lineup.

When this 4WD crossover was redesigned for the 2017 MY, it didn't just replace its previous generation. It replaced two entire generational lines, combining everything that was good about the boxy Compass and the boxier Patriot into one clean, classic look. The all-new model sits roughly between the Renegade and the Cherokee in size, though its overall appearance is heavily influenced by the "Grand Cherokee" design language that Jeep has found to be a winning recipe.

Entry-level 2019 Compass models start at around $22,000, and fully loaded models can quickly get up near the $30,000 mark--which is still a wildly good deal for a well-equipped SUV of this caliber and capability.

Styling and the new look of the ComPatriot

The new generation of Compass/Patriot SUVs--just called the Compass--keeps a lot of staples: a Jeep seven-slot grille, wide-set face, impressive ground clearance, and a sleek, well-muscled body. But, there are plenty of updates for this second-gen Compass (or, is it the first-gen New Compass?) to bring it into the modern era. An available dual-pane sunroof mimics the "open-air freedom" of the Jeep Wrangler's removable roof. Chrome accents and two-tone exterior color options add a bold new dash of luxury styling. And, of course, the Trailhawk® trim stands alone with an aggressive exterior design and exclusive trail-rated equipment.

It's not at all hard to see the influence of the Cherokee/Grand Cherokee language in the look of the new Jeep Compass. It's almost harder to tell them apart. But, a perfect recipe is a perfect recipe--no matter the serving size.

Exterior color options for the 2019 Compass include Redline Red Pearl, Spitfire Orange Pearl, Laser Blue Pearl, Olive Green Pearl, Jazz Blue Pearl, Billet Silver Metallic, Granite Crystal Metallic, Diamond Black Crystal Pearl, Pearl White Tri-Coat, Bright White Tri-Coat, and Sting Grey.

Trim level options

For 2019, the Jeep Compass offers four unique and well-equipped trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Altitude, Trailhawk®, and Limited. Here are the highlights of each trim level:

You may be used to the stoic, Spartan minimalism of the old Jeep crew--or, of the current Jeep Wrangler. In the old days, you had to opt for seats. Yes, seats were extra. Today, the Jeep brand caters to a population that still wants the rough and the tumble, the rugged and the robust--but really wants heated seats, too.

The interior of the 2019 Compass is more luxurious than it's ever been, even just at the base model. Moving up through the trims, you can add premium, swoon-worthy features and materials. Interior color themes include Black, Black and Sandstorm, Black and Ski Grey, and trim-exclusive Trailhawk Black.

Powertrain options and sorting out transmissions

The 2019 Jeep Compass comes standard with a familiar 2.4-liter Tigershark® MultiAir® 2 engine--this time, good for about 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, a fair rating among SUVs of this size. Unlike some models in the SUV lineup, the Compass gives you just that one engine option.

However, you do get your choice of three transmissions. Aren't you spoiled?

A six-speed manual transmission typically comes standard on most 4x2 and 4x4 models, and offers easy shifting and that classic stick feel. A six-speed automatic transmission is available on 4x2 models only, for people who never learned the glorious art of the manual gear swap. On only 4x4 models, Jeep's advanced nine-speed automatic transmission is an option, and offers a slick, smooth ride.
